When you laugh, smile, frown, furrow your forehead in puzzlement or raise your brows in surprise, you contract the muscles of your face. Over time, these contractions create deep wrinkles in your skin, especially in high-movement areas around your eyes, mouth and forehead. Botox Cosmetic treatments can soften these marks of aging, leaving you looking younger and refreshed.

If you are looking for a nonsurgical solution for moderate to severe dynamic facial lines, you may be a candidate for Botox Cosmetic. You can expect to see improvements within days after your appointment and enjoy your results for several months. Contact us to join the Almonte Center family and discover the skin you have always wanted.

What Is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox has been used therapeutically for over 30 years to treat an array of medical conditions. Today it’s approved in more than 90 countries, and is both the most-studied botulinum toxin and one of the most researched medicines of any kind in the world. In 2002, the same formulation — under the label Botox Cosmetic — was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65. It has since earned additional approvals for the treatment of forehead lines and crow’s feet. Botox Cosmetic is the most requested treatment of its kind around the world.

What Is Botox Cosmetic Made Of?

Botox Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified botulinum toxin. One of the underlying causes of facial wrinkles is repeated muscle contractions that force your skin to crease over and over in the same location. Botox Cosmetic temporarily reduces muscle activity by acting as a buffer between your brain and your muscles. When your brain tells the treated muscle to move, the muscle will stay relaxed and the overlying skin will remain smooth. This muscle-relaxing effect will gradually wear off and your facial movements will return to normal. Visiting The Almonte Center for regular Botox injections will sustain your refreshed look indefinitely.

What Is Botox Used For?

Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for:

  • Vertical frown lines between the brows (a.k.a. glabellar lines or “11s”)
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet

Off-label usage of Botox is very popular. Experienced injectors may also use it for facial slimming, brow lifting, lip enhancement and “gummy smile” reduction.

While Botox is best known as a cosmetic treatment, it also has a variety of therapeutic applications. It has been successfully incorporated into treatment plans for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraines, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), overactive bladder and various muscle spasticity conditions.

Who Is a Candidate for Botox Cosmetic?

Botox injections are most commonly performed on patients who fall within the 30 to 60 age range; however, a younger generation of patients are now starting Botox treatments earlier as a wrinkle prevention measure. In general, a good Botox Cosmetic patient:

  • Is over 18
  • Is starting to see signs of aging on their face
  • Is not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Has no neurological disorders or diseases that may affect their muscle activity
  • Is in good general health
  • Understands the treatment process
  • Has reasonable expectations for their results

How Much Does Botox Cosmetic Cost?

On average, each unit of Botox costs about $9 to $18. The total cost of a Botox Cosmetic treatment varies widely, as every patient needs different amounts and in different areas. If your recommended treatment regimen is outside of your budget or you wish to make payments, we offer financing solutions with CareCredit.

How to Prepare for a Botox Cosmetic Treatment

We recommend taking a few precautions before receiving Botox Cosmetic injections. In the week before your treatment, avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), high doses of vitamin E supplements or St. John’s wort, as they may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site. If you have previously had cold sores, discuss this with your injector. You may be prescribed a medication to minimize recurrence.

What to Expect From Your Botox Cosmetic Procedure

Before your Botox procedure, you will have a consultation with one of our experienced injectors. This one-on-one time is critical for a safe treatment and satisfying results. During this part of the appointment, your injector will assess your skin, review your medical history, discuss any medications you’re currently using and explain the Botox Cosmetic procedure. If they determine that Botox is right for your needs, the injections can proceed immediately after the consultation.

Botox Cosmetic is administered into specific facial muscles with a thin needle. Most people feel minimal to no discomfort during the procedure, but topical anesthesia can be used if you prefer. This part of the appointment can be over in just 10 to 15 minutes.

What To Expect After Your Botox Cosmetic Procedure

Discomfort is typically mild after Botox Cosmetic injections. Side effects such as swelling, redness or bruising may occur around the injection site, but they should resolve on their own before long. You can resume most of your normal activities right away. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for the first 24 hours. Your Almonte Center injector will inform you of all possible side effects of Botox Cosmetic and the recommended aftercare before your procedure.

How Long Does It Take for Botox to Work?

You may begin to notice results from your Botox Cosmetic treatment within 24 to 48 hours, but the full effect will develop gradually over the next week or two. Try not to rub or massage the area, as this could cause the product to migrate, impacting the overall results.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Botox Cosmetic lasts three to four months on average. Your smoother, softer appearance will make you look fresh and youthful, without affecting your ability to express yourself naturally. Muscle action will eventually return as the treatment wears off. Scheduling maintenance sessions three to four times a year will sustain your refreshed appearance indefinitely. With repeated treatments, you may notice your lines becoming less severe because the overactive muscles have weakened. You also may require fewer units of Botox Cosmetic to achieve your desired result.
